IN-NYC 2012 Keynote Speaker – President Higgins

It was a morning of ‘firsts’ at the Irish Network NYC (IN-NYC) 2012 Keynote Speaker address hosted by BNY Mellon, May 1st. IN-NYC hosted an elegant breakfast event to celebrate his Excellency, Michael D.Higgins, President of Ireland as its keynote speaker. This was the first official U.S. visit of President Higgins’ term and also the first IN-NYC engagement to host a sitting President. Thus appropriate that the event was held at the historic landmark address of 1 Wall St, headquarters of BNY Mellon, the first established bank in the United States. Eric Moore, Chairman IN-NYC, encapsulated this sentiment in his opening remarks welcoming President Higgins and the networks members. Mr. Moore commented after the event saying “Today’s event was brought to another level with President Higgins inspiring and positive address and the great honor IN- NYC had as the first organization President Higgins would meet on his inaugural visit to the U.S. I believe his excellency’s experiences from both home and his time living in the U.S led him to closely resonate with the three pillars IN-NYC and its members stand upon; networking, mentoring and community outreach”

President Higgins also spoke about his vision for his Presidency being based around the cultivation and development of ideas across all sections of society ranging from developments in the pharma industry through to increased support of arts. Addressing an audience of next generation Irish business leaders and the established senior Irish and Irish American leaders of New York, he acknowledged the importance of being proud of our cultural heritage, which is already well known globally but President Higgins added, that we should be equally proud of our other great traditions for example the science tradition, mentioning William Rowan Hamilton – the famed Irish physicist, astonomer and mathematician. Another theme he discussed was the vitality that strong, ethical leadership instils in people, organizations, and countries. Referrencing the great work that IN-NYC does in New York through mentoring by connecting recent Irish arrivals with appropriate mentors across the city.

1st Irish Theatre Festival Submissions

1st Irish Theatre Festival is now accepting submissions for its 2012 Festival at www.1stirish.org. This is the only Theatre Festival in the world dedicated to Irish Playwrights. Festival Dates are Sept 3rd – Oct 1st 2012 in New York. Applications close April 10th, please click here for a direct link to the application form.
